Preview and Prediction
Il Giallorossi are involved in a race for European competition till matchday 38. The remaining six games will be decisive ones for them as they are on the fifth with only two point margin from Napoli and four points adrift of AC Milan on the seventh. This means every point counts for Paulo Fonseca’s men. This midweek, they will be hosting Verona, whose form has been inconsistent after the restart yet still potentially dangerous. Miguel Veloso and Co are still on the ninth with ten points away from Roma.
The teams’ previous matches
Roma had an easy 3-0 win while meeting Brescia on the road last weekend. Federico Fazio netted an opener followed by the Croatian international Niko Kalinic’s and the youngster Nicola Zaniolo’s goal. It was their second consecutive victory after three series of defeats before.
Ivan Juric’s men seemed to be unable to recover after losing from Brescia. They had only two points in the past two games. Last weekend, Verona even let their chance to seal a win slipped away while travelling to Florence. They were held by the host in a 1-1 draw. Matteo Passani did open the score sheet very early. Yet, the host’s late goal by the former AC Milan man, Patrick Cutrone ruined everything.
The former Shakhtar Donestk’s boss, Paulo Fonseca has gained positive results after modifying the formation to 3-4-2-1. Edin Dzeko is still the main frontman with Niko Kalinic as the back up. He will get supports from Henrikh Mikhitariyan or Carles Perez and Lorenzo Pellegrini. Their hole in the defense line due to the absence of Chris Smalling, Juan Jesus and Davide Santon can be covered by Roger Ibanez, Gianluca Mancini or even the midfielder Bryan Cristante.
The former Genoa boss, Ivan Juric tends to deploy 3-4-1-2 with the transition to 3-4-2-1. He counts on the attacking midfielders Matteo Pessina, Mattia Zaccagni plus the main scorer, Samuel Di Carmine with Valerio Verre who can come off the bench to make the difference in the second half as Giampaolo Pazzini and AC Milan loanee, Fabio Borini are sidelined along with Salvatore Bocchetti.
Players to watch
The formation alteration has brought change on the flanks, especially the left one, which has been Alexander Kolarov’s position all season long. Yet, since last week, Leonardo Spinazzola is given the spot and has been performing well. Some other notable key men are Lorenzo Pellegrini who has been pushed forward and the midfield Jordan Veretout.
Verona’s impressive form this season is mainly due to the brilliance of Ivan Juric’s tactics and his Genoa’s connection such as Miguel Veloso and Darko Lazovic. They have been irreplaceable in his best starting IX. Another notable figure to watch is the right wing back, Marco Faraoni who has scored four goals and made three assists.
Roma vs Verona Prediction
Edin Dzeko and Co are expected to win again in this match as Verona has been not at their best since the restart. However, they still have to be cautious as the visiting side have the potentials to disrupt any high profile team’s positive trend this season. Inter and Juventus are some of the examples. Considering both teams’ form lately, the host’s chance to secure three points is still bigger.
The punters seem to still bet on AS Roma, which are backed to win at 1.65, whereas Verona is in the win market at 5.25. The odds for the draw result are at the value of 4.20.
