Athletes plans shattered by COVID-19 preventive measures

  • The Kenya county authorities have suspended all the public gatherings following the presidential directive on Sunday concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.

The athletics fraternity is hugely affected by the orders made to close the training camps in the North Rift region.  This is done to stop further spread of Coronavirus in the country. Needless to say, 4 more cases were confirmed today afternoon!

On Monday, the governors of Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties ordered the closure of the training camps. The order plunged the plans of the athletes who were preparing for both international and local races.

The major training camps – Murutwo junior, Rosa Associati and 2 more running camps in Kapsabet – have been closed. Both the experienced and budding athletes have been asked to vacate the camps.

Iten Athletics training camp, Lornah Kiplagat training camp and Runfast athletic camps have been shut down by the Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos.

“I order closure of all athletics training camps and gyms with the exception of individualised training,” Tolgos said.

In the neighboring Nandi county, Governor Sang said that they have decided to close the camps as per the directives given by the president of Kenya to suspend all public gatherings as easy as possible.

The 3rd edition of Eldoret City that was scheduled to take place on April 19 was now unclear whether it is still on or not.

“We are planning for the race and any decision as to whether it will be canceled by communicated soon,” said Governor Jackson Mandago.

As the cases of the individuals affected by this pandemic disease increase. All citizens should always be in the proper care of themselves. We hope to see the cure being invented soon since the pandemic has denied many people the freedom of doing what they adore.
