Nairobi is set to become the first African City to host Athletic Continental Tour after CS Ambassador Amina Mohamed met with World Athletics President Sebastian Coe on November 22, 2019.
The opening leg of 2020 World Athletics Continental Tour is an important moment for Kenya and Africa at large. It is a lucrative event which Africans has waited for so long.
There will be a series of meetings to take place across the world. The first one of all will be held in Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani on 2nd May. The second one at Tokyo on 10th May and the last meeting is cheduled to be held in Zagreb, Coatia in September 2020.
The East Africa’s most developed city, Nairobi will stage 3, 000m steeplechase, 10, 000m and 5, 000m for men and women as a commemoration of this amazing event which makes history in our country.
According to Sebastian Coe, the main aim of creating a continental tour is to provide earning opportunities and stiff competition for the potential athletes.
“Between the Wanda Diamond League and the Continental Tour all disciplines will be catered for and many more athletes will have access to top-class competition,’’ Coe stated.
In addition, this event will be divided into three distinct levels – Gold, Silver and Bronze – which will be determined by the prize money offered and the quality of each particular competition.
The World Athletics is focusing on Gold Level meeting to increase the number of opportunities which are competitive and available for showcasing over diverse heritage of athletics. Each gold level is going to offer Sh20 million prize money.
In a nutshell, this event is going to be beneficial for all the athletes who want to showcase their prowess in athletics because it has been brought right at their doorstep.
