Preview and Prediction
It is the last round of La Liga and the spots for Europa League are still open with five teams fighting for the two places, Villareal, Real Sociedad, Granada, Valencia, Getafe. Sociedad needs to pick up three points this weekend for the European ticket next season. Yet, it will not be an easy task as they have to travel to Wanda Metropolitano to face Diego Simeone’s side which has secured the Champions League spot.
Both teams’ previous matches
Los Rojiblancos continued their positive trend despite having no objective left. They crushed Getafe 2-0 in the midweek fixture. Marcos Llorente and Thomas Partey netted the winning goals. Such result marks their unbeaten run in 17 games in all competition.
Imanol Alguacil’s men only managed to snatch one point while hosting Sevilla in the midweek. They only muster a goalless draw. It was quite a disappointing result which only makes it even harder to be in the continental competition next season.
Diego Simeone might attempt a different formation or line up as he did previously against Getafe. The former River Plate and Catania boss might deploy 4-2-3-1 again as Joao Felix is sidelined due to his injury. So Simeone will not be employing 2 forwards as he used to. He will put Morata or Deigo Costa as the lone striker while Angel Correa and Thomas Lemar will be playing wide. Some other figures sitting out of this fixture are Mario Hermoso and Sime Vrasjlko.
Imano Alguacil could opt for 5-3-2 again which gives more solidity in their defense line. Alexander Isak should earn his spot in the starting IX instead of William Jose alongside Portu. there is Martin Odengaard and Mikel Oyarzabal who will be in both flanks accompanied by Mikel Merino. The former Manchester United man, Adnan Januzaj is sidelined along with Asier Illaramendi, Luca Sangalli and Armando Guevara.
Players to watch
In Los Choconeros, physical fitness and versatility are vital in their system of play. No wonder that their top performers are not the strikers but their midfielder centers like Saul Niguez, Koke and Thomas Partey. Another worth watching figure is the Belgian Yannick Carrasco who just returned to Madrid this January. He has contributed one goal and two assists.
Sociedad’s top performers recently are Mikel Merino who has contributed five goals and one assist, Mikel Oyarzabal and Martin Odegaard. Another notable key man recently is the former Athletico Madrid goalie, Miguel Moya, who performed quite well against Sevilla.
Athletico vs Real Sociedad Prediction
Diego Costa and Co might have no objective left but it does not mean that they just give away the points to the visitor. Despite the possibility for the home side to put some young or reserved players in the starting IX, Sociedad might not be able to benefit from them due to their unconvincing form of their attacking lines lately. So, another draw for both seems more likely.
Alguacil’s men are certainly not the favourite. They are priced to win at 4.00. Atletico Madrid are backed to win at 2.00 while the odds for draw result are at 2.95.
