- The best coaches and players this season on the NSL are going to be awarded, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed yesterday.
Nick Mwendwa who is the FKF president said that they have already started talks with the sponsors of the league, Betika. The event will possibly take place at the end of the season according to FKF president.
The award or the recognition of NSL will be the first in history. Outstanding performances are not going to be left out again!
There will be an NSL gala at the end of the season. It is part of the contract we have with Betika. It might not be as much detailed but it will take place,” Mwendwa said.
The SJAK Awards which is staged by the sports betting journalists is only focused at the top-tier league, Kenya Premier League (KPL) leaving the second tier unrecognized.
Johnson Sakwa who is the chairman of the NSL Governing Council said that awarding the players as well as the coaches will make the league competitive.
“It is a good move. Players will feel motivated and they will give their best to win the awards. This will see the league become more vibrant,” said Sakwa.
In addition, Betika gave each team of NSL Sh100, 000 to carter for the expenses that the teams can incur during the season. This just came after FKF and Betika announced a three-year sponsorship of the league last year.
John Mbatia who is the head of Betika confirmed that the kits and balls are also part of the sponsorship plan.
“When we took over sponsorship of NSL last year we said we wanted to grow community football. Providing the teams with the uniforms and balls as part of our sponsorship, which we believe will help the teams perform better,” said Mbatia.
