Gladbach’s form has not been convincing yet after the victory in Frankfurt. Their position in the standings is also in danger as their points are just the same as their contender below them, Bayer Leverkusen, on the fifth. Thus, seeking another win is their main mission this weekend while hosting Union Berlin, which are currently still struggling to avoid relegation. Neven Subotic and Co are still four points away from the red zone.
Both teams’ previous matches
Gladbach failed to secure a win while travelling to Bremen in the midweek fixture. They were held in a goalless draw by the host which have been also working hard to pick up points for safety. Unfortunately, Lars Stindl and Co were much better at the defending than attacking as they were barely able to make decent chances.
Union Berlin were not so much different. They had a 1-1 draw result while taking on Mainz 05. They conceded first by Ridle Baku’s strike at the back of the net. Yet, twenty minutes later, Union could finally level the visitor’s side by Marcus Ingvartsen’s free kick. However, the score sheet stayed the same till the final whistle.
Marco Rose is crucially in need of improving their attack and clinical finish considering their failure to optimise the shots on target in their last two games. He might still be deploying 3-5-2 with the possible transition to 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-2-1. The duo Frenchmen, Alessane Plea and Marcus Thuram will still be the main choice supported by Lazlo Benes or Lars Stindl as the number ten role.
Urs Fischer prefers to pick 3-4-3 formation with the transition to 4-3-3 if necessary to provide more balance. Marcus Ingvartsen, Sebastian Andersson and Sebastian Polter or Mariusz Bulter would be picked for the line up. Union has similar issue on the attack as their opponent, lacking on clinical finish. This is something Urs Fischer needs to work on immediately.
Players to watch
Gladbach’s key men this season are certainly the French connection Marcus Thuram and Alessane Plea. They both have scored seventeen goals and provided sixteen assists altogether. Some other notable figures in the team are Remy Bensebaini and the goalie Yann Sommer who made a bunch of crucial saves in the previous match.
In Union Berlin, their top performers of this season are their top scorer Sebastian Andersson with eleven goals, the top assists provider Christopher Trimmel with seven assists and the versatile Mariusz Bulter who has bagged seven goals so far.
Gladbach vs Union Berlin Prediction
This is the clash of two teams which share similar attacking frailty. Nevertheless, with the better players in the squad, Marco Rose’s men should be able to thump the visitor, at least by a single goal. However, if Union Berlin’s defense line could close down the French duo, the result is likely to be draw again.
The host is still regarded as the favourite according to the punters. Gladbach’s odds to win are at 1.49. Union Berlin are only backed to win at 6.65, whereas the odds for the draw result are at 4.20.
