Preview and Prediction
The Blues’ hope for finishing on top four is not hard at all, with one condition only, sealing three points this weekend while hosting Wolverhampton. It is the only safe way without worrying too much about the result of their contenders’ clash, Leicester vs Manchester United, but Wolves are one of the most consistent dark horses in the past two seasons. They even still progress in Europa League until now. No wonder that this is still an intriguing encounter.
The teams’ previous matches
In the midweek, Olivier Giroud and Co were beaten in an eight-goal thriller in Anfield. The Reds whose EPL trophy was finally presented afterwards, were on fire and trashed Chelsea with the goals from Naby Keita, Trent-Alexander Arnold, Giorginio Wijnaldum, Roberto Firmino and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain. The Blues could only reply three times by Giroud, Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic. Such result held them from keeping their third position on the table.
The Wolves, on the other hand, secured a 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace last midweek. Their wing backs had crucial roles on the winning goals. Their right wing back, Matt Doherty provided an assist for Daniel Podence’s goal while their left one, Jonny, even the one who doubled their lead.
Frank Lampard has been quite adaptable in deploying his formation. It can be 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-2-1. Olivier Giroud might still be opted as their main forward at the moment with the support from Christian Pulisic and Willian on both wings. However, N’Golo Kante is not available yet due to his injury and so are Billy Gilmour, Marco Van Ginkel and Ross Barkley. Thus, Mateo Kovacic and Robin Loftus-Creek are the best ones to cover them in 4-3-3.
Nuno Santo tends to stick to his favourite 3-4-2-1 with the transition to 3-4-1-2, 3-4-3 and 3-5-2. The Mexican sensation Raul Jimenez is the main front man along with Diogo Jota and the versatile winger Adama Traore. They have been deadly and daunting in both competitions, Premier League and Europa League.
Players to watch
The young American, Christian Pulisic has been in a positive form this season, especially after the restart. Overall, he has contributed nine goals and four assists so far. Some other top performers in Lampard’s squad are Marcos Alonso, Willian and the captain Cesar Azpilicueta.
In Wolves, the La Masia graduate, Adama Traore has been the key figure of the season. His power, pace, physical strength and composure have led him to be one of the most wanted versatile figures in the next transfer window. Another notable man to watch is surely the Mexican sensation, Raul Jimenez.
Chelsea vs Wolves Prediction
Jose Moutinho and Co might still be the menace for Chelsea in this game, although their maximum result here would not be sufficient to lift them up to the sixth. Therefore, there’s a chance that Nuno Santo would put some of his reserved players in the line up. That could be an opportunity for Lampard’s men to pick up a win at home.
This match is expected to be a tough yet the host is still the favourite. They are backed to win at 1.85 whereas The Wolves are only priced to win at 4.15. The odds for the draw result are a bit higher at 3.80.
