Betting firm SportPesa on Tuesday made real their threat to pull out from all the sponsorship contracts with various sports organizations in the country. This is after their appeal against the government’s 35 per cent tax imposition was thrown out, leaving them with tougher decisions to make.
They indeed made a decision, quite dubious and risky but understandable from their point of view. SportPesa chief executive Ronald Karauri told the BBC World Service on Tuesday that the company was pressed and had no better decision than terminating the contracts.
The affected sports are boxing, rugby, football (down from the lower division upto the top tier league) and volleyball. SportPesa were also the official sponsors of the Kenya Premier League and the Football Kenya Federation. The latest development means all these entities will go back to the drawing board to strategize operations for 2018 and beyond. What a sad way to begin the new year!
So,as clubs, federations and personalities came to terms with the bombshell, Kenyans on the web also made their feelings felt. They yelled, reacted, complained but some also supported SportPesa for pulling out. Here,we sample some of the reactions as expressed by the enthusiastic Kenyans in the world of sports and gaming.
Did SportPesa get it right? Or was the government too harsh on them?
Now that SportPesa has pullout out on sponsoring local sports thanks to the extravagant tax rate by GoK, can @Ukenyatta & one @williamsruto finance @OfficialGMFC & @AFCLeopards as the 2 sides are set to represent Kenya in 2018 CAF competitions.

Ooooohhh Sportpesa is claiming to withdraw Ksh 600million sponsorship of sports in the country. That’s a drop in the ocean for a company which raked over Ksh 1.3billion every month. You loot Ksh 15billion per year than claim that you will withdraw the measly 4%? Idiotic!!!

we not defending Sportpesa for withdrawing. but we’d rather we sure our gambling money ends up sponsoring sports than it ending up in this useless government knowing so well that it’ll finally benefit few, greedy corrupt politicians and do nothing for sports
