Preview and Prediction
Juventus’ domestic campaign this season might not be satisfactory compared to the previous ones, despite retaining the title for 9th times consecutively. To make up for such slight dismay, there is only one way left, winning the Champions League. This midweek is when it all start as they will be hosting Olympique Lyon. Les Gones had one-goal advantage after their stunning narrow victory before the lockdown. However, such surely does not guarantee anything, apart from improving their confidence, especially when they have to travel to the lion’s den.
The teams’ previous matches
La Vecchia Signora seemed to keep their best starting eleven on the bench, including in the last round of Serie A against AS Roma last weekend. No wonder that Maurizio Sarri’s men failed to hold on their early one-goal lead after Gonzalo Higuain tapped into the back of the net. His Argentinean comrade in Giallorossi, Diego Perrotti become Juventus’ nightmare with his brace and assist for Nikola Kalinic’s header. Juventus eventually had their seventh defeats this season.
Meanwhile, Les Gones were involved in a hard-fought game against PSG in the Coupe de La Ligue final. It ended in a goalless draw before Lyon lost 5-6 in penalties at the end.
Maurizio Sarri has always been in favour of 4-3-3 formation with transition to 4-3-1-2. Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain and Federico Bernardeschi or Aaron Ramsey are the best option upfront to cover Paulo Dybala’s absence, which might concern Sarri more as he has been the key man on the attack. Some other names on the injury table are Matteo Di Scoglio, Sami Khedira and Douglas Costa.
Meanwhile, the former AS Roma boss, Rudi Garcia, might be deploying 3-1-4-2 or 3-4-2-1 as he did against PSG last week. It should be quite effective to keep their opponent’s attacking line at bay.
Players to watch
Sarri’s men top performers this season are not far from their megastar Cristiano Ronaldo with thirty one goals and five assists in Serie A. With Dybala’s absence, Aaron Ramsey could be the proper replacement as he will be playing as number 10 behind CR7 and Higuian. The Welsh international has just scored one in Champions League.
In Lyon, the Dutch international, Memphis Depay is certainly the key figure of his team. He has netted 14 goals and two asissts in Ligue 1 and UCL. Another notable name to watch is the goalie Anthony Lopes, who is likely to be busier than the outfield players in this match.
Juventus vs Lyon Prediction
Cristiano Ronaldo and Co will definitely take control of the game and attempt to score as soon as possible to ease their burden. This is where Lyon needs to be cautious otherwise their advantage from the first leg will mean nothing. A victory for the home side is still probable.
Juventus is still considered as the absolute favourite. They are backed to win at 1.45 whereas Lyon is in the lower win market at 7.55. The odds for the draw result are at the value of 4.60
