Preview and Prediction
This season, Les Gones’ domestic campaign might be disappointing as they only finished on the seventh of the table last season. Yet, it is quite in contrast in the Champions League. Memphis Depay and Co have been able to advance to the semifinal, repeating their success ten years ago. In fact, they will be taking on the same team which defeated them on the same stage in 2010, Bayern Munchen. Thus, there is no better time to revenge their humiliating loss back then here and now in Jose Avalade Stadium, Lisbon this midweek.
The teams’ previous matches
Rudi Garcia’s men sealed one place in the semifinal last weekend after beating The Citizens 3-1. They were able to ensure Manchester City’s curse with Guardiola in Champions League endure as they failed to progress from quarter final in four season consecutively. Maxine Cornet scored an opener before Kevin De Bruyne equalised. Lyon’s winning goal came at the second half by Moussa Dembele’s brace.
Die Roeten progressed to the semifinal after an easy win over their contender, Barcelona. They trashed Lionel Messi and Co 8-2. The goals were equally shared by Ivan Perisic, Serge Gnarby, Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski plus Thomas Muller and Phillipe Coutinho with a brace each. The Catalan side only scored twice through David Alaba’s own goal and Luis Suarez.
Rudi Garcia is definitely in favour of his regular 3-5-2 formation with the transition to 3-5-1-1. Memphis Depay and Moussa Dembele are the best option, but Karl-Toko Ekambi might be selected as well for the starting IX as he did in the previous game. They will try to hold the defence line and attempt to frustrate them before building the swift counter attack.
His counterpart is more confident with his offensive 4-2-3-1 formation. The quarter on the attacking side, Serge Gnarby, Thomas Muller, Ivan Perisic and Lewandowski are likely to be opted again in the line-up. The absence of Benjamin Pavard and their new signing, Leroy Sane, will not affect much as they have sufficient figures to cover in the squad.
Players to watch
In Lyon’s squad, the Dutch international, Memphis Depay is still one of the top performers in UCL with six goals. Some other key figures are Houssam Aouar, Moussa Dembele, Maxine Cornet and the Portuguese goalie Anthony Lopes.
Meanwhile, Bayern will still be relying on Thomas Muller, the current top assist provider in Europe alongside Messi. He has scored four goals and made two assist in UCL. Another notable one is none but Robert Lewandowski, the current UCL top scorer with fourteen goals.
Lyon vs Bayern Prediction
Les Gones will absolutely fight till their last drop to reach the final and hope to win the title as it is the only way they could have European fixture next season. Otherwise, their stars might be leaving them when they have a chance for playing in this elite competition. Thus, Houssam Aouar and Co will be doing what they did against Juventus in the round of 16. By containing Lewy and closing down Thomas Muller, they could hope to strike back and steal one goal for a glorious victory.
Bayern might still be the dominant side, but Lyon will surely not be the same as Barcelona. Yet, according to the punters, Les Gones are priced to win much lower at 12.25 whereas Hans Flick’s men are projected to win at 1.24. The odds for a draw result are only at 6.80.
