Preview and Prediction
The Red Devils are on fire after the lockdown. They are now just one point away from Leicester on the fourth and ready to return to Champions League next season. They should not be too difficult to seal all 12 points in the remaining four games to finish on the top four. This weekend Solksjaer’s men are hosting Southampton, which sits on the 12th of the table and have been quite safe from the relegation threat. It might be another easy win for the host.
The teams’ previous matches
Marcus Rashford and Co secured three points on the road while meeting Aston Villa. They smashed the Villans 3-0. Bruno Fernandes took the lead by his penalty followed by Mason Greenwood’s blasting drive. At the second half, it was Paul Pogba’s turn to put his name on the score sheet after his long range shot found the back of the net. It was his first goal of the season.
The Saints, on the other hand, was involved in a hard-fought game against Everton and had a 1-1 draw. The match in Goodison Park was tight but they could score an opener by Danny Ings who tapped the ball into the net. Yet, the host was bombarding them before they equalised through Richarlison’s strike.
Ole Solksjaer seems to be more confident with his regular 4-2-3-1 with Bruno Fernandes as the anchor of the attack supported by Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay or Nemanja Matic. Anthony Martial will be the main frontman alongside Greenwood and surely Marcus Rashford. Fortunately, only a few names will have to be ruled out and not affect much of their starting IX. They are Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe.
The former RB Leipzig boss, Ralph Hassenhutl tends to deploy 4-4-2 formation with the possible transition to 4-2-2-2 or 5-3-2 if necessary to frustrate the Solksjaer’s side. Danny Ings would be the main option at the front accompanied by possibly Che Adams while Nathan Redmond and Stuart Amstrong will be playing wide. On the injury table, Moussa Djenepo, Yan Valery, Sofiane Boufal, Jannik Vestergaard have to sit out.
Players to watch
Manchester United’s shining youngster this season is Mason Greenwood. The 19-year old versatile winger has scored nine goals and one assist this season. Other key men to watch are surely the fantastic Bruno Fernandes whose arrival makes The Red Devil’s games more attractive with his creativity and last but not least, Paul Pogba who has been improving since his recovery.
The former Liverpool man who spent most of his time in Anfield on a injury table, Danny Ings, has had an impressive form with The Saints this season. He has bagged nineteen goals and provided two assists this season. Some other notable names to watch are the Scottish winger Stuart Amstrong with his four goals and three assists and James Ward-Prowse.
Manchester United vs Southampton Prediction
Ole Solksjaer’s men are likely to continue their positive trend. They have been unbeaten in the last seventeen games in all competitions with only four draws. This outstanding record should be daunting for Ralph Hassenhutl’s men. The only success they could cling on for this fixture is their victory against Manchester City recently. Nevertheless, it might not be enough to prevent Manchester United from picking up three points here.
The home side is surely the clear favourite. They are backed to win at 1.27, whereas Southampton’s win market is only at 11.00. The odd for the draw result is at the value of 5.65.
