- Harambee Starlets’ Akida is the second Kenyan female football player to sign a deal with the top European club after Doreen Nabwire signed a deal with Werder Bremen.
The sensational Harambee Starlets striker Essie Mbeyu Akida has finally signed a two-year deal with the Turkish club, Besiktas.
Akida becomes the second female footballer after Doreen Nabwire signed a deal with Werder Bremen in 2009. Akida is also the first East African player to play for a team which is Champions League. Furthermore, she is also the only African player in the Turkish Besiktas squad.
The versatile striker was among the women players who were featured in the squad that represented Kenya in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nation 2016. She is also the Starlets all-time top scorer with 15 goals.
Akida believes that as long as she puts hard work on her career, the results will always be the best.
“I’m aware that it is an uphill task but I am willing to go the distance. Over the years, I have also believed that hard work beats talent and however much one is talented when it comes to football tips, who wants it more carries the day.
It is my hope and prayer that with the passion I have, I will be able to continue giving my best at my new club. The league here is ongoing and they are now in the second leg of the season and I would like to make my presence felt each time I get an opportunity,” Akida added
Besiktas women’s side is currently holding the second position of the league with 36 points. They are just a point behind ALG Spor who are the league leaders. We hope the Kenyan sensational striker will manage to score more goals for the Besiktas women’s side.
