The national rugby seven men’s team, Shujaa harvested 10 points in the IRB Seven Series Hamilton Leg as they crushed South Africa 36-14.
Shujaa played a good game during the entire event. However, they were unlucky after Argentina crushed them 19-17 in the seventh-place playoff of the 3rd round. The 2019/2020 World Sevens Series adjourned yesterday in New Zealand.
Consequently, Shujaa jumped one place in the overall standings and is now at 10th position with 25 points ahead of the Sydney Sevens in Australia scheduled for this weekend.
Kenya’s victory over South Africa in pool B was the only win which Shujaa secured. On the other hand, South Africa registers their first success over Blitzboks since 2015/2016 season.
Kenyans stars Collins Injera, Alvin Otieno and William Ambaka crossed the whitewash with Jeffrey Oluoch and Vincent Onyalla also registered their names in the score sheet.
Shujaa had started perfectly when they relinquished a 19-5 advantage to lose 24-19 to England. However, Shujaa blow its lead when they were held 12-12 by Japan.
The case was also similar to the Argentines as Shujaa restored from seven-point deficit to lead 17-7 during half time but the lads concede two tries and one conversion in the second half.
The recently named Most Promising Boy of 2019 at the Kenya’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards, the KCB upcoming star (Geoffrey Okwach) had his series debut. He was among the try scorers in the Kenya’s 36-14 win against South Africa.
As Shujaa will be heading to the Australia competition this weekend, the head coach Feeney has huge task to undertake. He should ensure that Shujaa become very defensive and become more disciplined in the most important sections of the event. Kenyans expect better and spectacular performances in Sydney Sevens.
