The Kenya Premier League transfer window has been a buzz of activity. Players switching allegiances from one team to another as various clubs also seek to shape up ahead of a promising season 2018. Many players have shifted employers so far and a lot more could do so even as the season approaches thick and fast.
As is the norm in transfer windows, surprises would often occur. And such has been witnessed yet again this season. 2016 league champions Tusker FC stole the headlines with what looked like a total overhaul of a team they considered ‘not good enough’ and with that came the exodus of renowned Kenyan talents whose futures hang in limbo following that directive.
This formed the basis of the Kenya Premier League transfer window as other clubs, including reigning champions Gor Mahia raided the brewers to quench their thirst with players such as Humphrey Mieno.
Over six first team members were released by Tusker FC so did other clubs including AFC Leopards and Sofapaka. Here,we take a closer look at five players in the transfer window that could shape the 2018 season at their respective clubs.
Humphrey Mieno from Tusker to Gor Mahia– The legendary midfielder’s move to Gor Mahia was swept the airwaves. But the real news was really, his shocking departure from Tusker FC. It was an unprecedented move,so shocking but it happened. Having been a loyal servant at the Ruaraka-based club,Mieno can just get better at Gor Mahia.
Collins Okoth ‘Gatusso’ from Gor Mahia to AFC Leopards– A powerful lanky central midfielder switched allegiance to arch-rivals,AFC Leopards in the most unexpected circumstances. Reports indicated that he received a good deal at the den and with his play time at Gor getting slimmer by the day, this is a golden opportunity for the 26-year-old and the Leopards.
Clifford Alwanga from Tusker to Mathare United– The forward’s agility in front of goal is not in question but he somehow fell off his spark in the 2017 season.
Ibrahim Kitawi from Kariobangi Sharks to Sofapaka– Considered one of the best offensive midfielders in the country, Kitawi comes to Sofapaka with a wealth of experience having previously featured for multiple KPL champions Gor Mahia as well as Bandari, Nakumatt and Sharks.
Peter Nzuki from Nakumatt to Tusker FC– The brewers roped in the services of Nakumatt skipper Peter Nzuki,a popular figure who aided the club into promotion to the 2017 KPL promotion.
