Preview and Prediction
The two dark horses of Serie A this season finally face off in this crucial clash. Both have managed to surpass anyone’s expectations this season. Atalanta, the most consistent and entertaining team lately, is now on the third of the table and still hoping to chase Juventus at the final stage of this title race, considering The Old Lady’s degrading form recently. Meanwhile, Verona is also struggling for the continental dream next season yet they are still stranded on the ninth due to their inconsistency. This will potentially be another possible thrilling encounter on the pitch, which is worth watching till the final whistle.
The teams’ previous matches
Verona had to suffer another defeat in their visit to the capital. AS Roma dismantled them 2-1 by Jordan Veretout’s penalty and Edin Dzeko’s header before Matteo Pessina tucked in the ball into the back of the net. Their winless run endures in the last four games consecutively.
Gian Gasperini’s men, on the other hand, sealed an easy win in a big score, 6-2 against Brescia last Tuesday. Their Croatian midfielder, Mario Pasalic scored a hattrick followed by Martin De Roon’s header, Ruslan Malinovsky’s long range shot and Duvan Zapata’s header. They only conceded twice from Ernesto Torregrossa and Nikolas Spalek. Atalanta have scored 93 goals now, which is the highest of all teams.
The former Genoa boss, Ivan Juric tends to deploy 3-4-1-2 with the transition to 3-4-2-1. Since Giampaolo Pazzini and AC Milan loanee, Fabio Borini, plus Salvatore Bocchetti are sidelined, the frontmen will still be Samuel Di Carmine or Valerio Verre and Mattia Zaccagni with the occasional Darko Lazovic pushed forward. However, considering their results lately, Juric might need to consider switching the formation to 4-3-2-1 by pulling back Matteo Faroni as the right wing back and Lazovic will be still playing on the left flank but also going deep as the defensive midfielder left alongside Miguel Veloso and Sofyan Amrabat of Emmanuel Badu.
His counterpart, also former Genoa boss with the brief spell in Inter, Gian Gasperini always employs the fluid 3-4-3 with the transition to 3-4-2-1 or 3-4-1-2. He often relies on high defensive-line and the players’ physical and versatility. Almost the entire figures in his squad can be put in more than one or even two positions, which often makes their starting IX hard to predict. Alejandro Gomez is likely to return to the pitch after being rested on the bench in the previous game. Yet, Luis Muriel is ruled out for this fixture.
Players to watch
Verona’s impressive form this season is mainly due to the brilliance of Ivan Juric’s tactics and his Genoa’s connection such as Miguel Veloso and Darko Lazovic. They have been irreplaceable in his best starting IX. The latter one can play more offensively as well and has scored three goals and provided six assists.
In Atalanta, Papu Gomez’s role on the attacking process is expected again after resting for one game. The Argentinean playmaker has bagged six goals and made sixteen assists in Serie A. Another notable figure to watch is the Colombian Duvan Zapata.
Verona vs Atalanta Prediction
Both teams are known for scoring more after conceding or vice versa. No wonder that a goal galore is expected here. Yet, the home side’s inconsistent form can be something that holds them back from their winning days, especially in this outing considering Papu Gomez and Co’s impressive performance lately. A narrow win for the visiting side in a thriller seems quite possible here.
Atalanta is surely regarded as the favourite. They are projected to win at 1.42, despite playing away, whereas Verona’s win market is only at 6.80. The odds for the draw result are at the value of 5.00.
