Two teams which were once competing in the mid lower table of Premier League are now squaring off in the second tier. However, only one of them still has a chance to make their return to the top flight. Blackburn is now lying on the eighth in the standings only separated by one point from Preston on the sixth. This weekend, Stuart Downing and Co will be taking on Wigan, which sits on the seventeenth, on the road.         

Both teams’ previous matches

Wigan Athletic marked their return after the restart with a positive result while travelling to Huddersfield. They won 2-0 over the host. Jamal Lowe and the former Norwich man, Anthony Pilkington scored the winning goals.

The Premier League Champions in 1995 Blackburn also came back from the break with a convincing form with the outcome of a 3-1 win versus Bristol City. They conceded first by Jamie Paterson’s goal. Possible tactic

Paul Cook seems to be opting for 4-2-3-1 formation. He relies on Anthony Pilkington as the number ten and Jamal Lowe who plays out wide to support the Welsh targetman Kieffer Moore. Yet, two of their men will be ruled out for this match due to their injury. They are Cheyenne Dunkley and Gary Roberts.

Meanwhile, the former West Bromwich and Celtic boss, Tony Mowbray is likely to deploy 4-3-1-2 like he did in the previous game. The veteran Stuart Downing and Lewis Holtby will be the key men in the midfield to support the duo upfront, Adam Amstrong and Corry Evans. Unfortunately, Amar’i Bell and John Buckley will miss the game due to the injury and suspension.

Wigan’s key figures this season are Kieffer Moore who has bagged six goals and provided four assists, the American left back, Antonee Robinson, Sam Morsy and the Nigerian international defender Leon Balogun.

In Blackburn, their top performers this season are the 22-year old defender Tosin Adarabioyo, the Irish Darragh Lenihan and the former Liverpool man, Stuart Downing who is also currently the top assists provider with eight assists so far. Some other notable names to watch are the twenty-three year old Scottish forward, Adam Amstrong who has contributed twelve goals and six assists, and the former Schalke and Tottenham man, Lewis Holtby.

Wigan vs Blackburn Prediction

Paul Cook’s side might be in difficulty to secure three points here despite their positive trend. The visitor has better squad with more experienced key men who could be a game changer eventually. A narrow win for Blackburn is more likely.

The game is expected to be even, according to the punters. The Latics are backed to win a bit higher is at 2.70, whereas Blackburn’s odds to win are only at 2.85.  The draw result is at the value of 3.10.
